Venice
Client profile
Designer and abstract artist with four rescue terriers; 1,400 square feet (originally 900). Once a quotidian 1940s domicile we completely rebuilt the Venice, California home from the ground up, embracing the principles of Japanese wabi-sabi commingling with Danish comfort. The exterior paint color was chosen to match an antique billiard ball and its Shou Sugi wood siding will distress over time; the interior is imbued with warmth, pattern, and individuality, its rich color palettes expressed throughout myriad means, including Ned Evans’s abstract paintings, alongside the work of Ken Price, Jill Geigerich, Esteban Bojorquez, Ed Ruscha, Bruce Richards, and others. We created one large comfortable living space leading into the back garden, so continuous cork floors span most of the home and there’s a steady glow of natural light from the skylights. The bespoke-designed kitchen features a boldly galactic hand-cut backsplash tile and raw birch millwork from floor-to-ceiling provides much-needed storage; vintage furniture, lighting, and Moroccan rugs are interspersed with new pieces created specifically for the house, creating a through line that connects the past with the present.
